Glutathione: the Master Antioxidant

What is glutathione? 

Glutathione is an extremely important antioxidant produced by our bodies. It is made up of three different amino acids which are synthesized within the body but can also be supplemented in the diet. Glutathione resides within our cells and is a powerful component of detoxification and maintenance of health.

Benefits of glutathione:

  • Helps prevent oxidative stress and cell damage

  • Aids in liver detoxification

  • Protects the body from environmental toxins

  • Plays a crucial role in the immune system

  • Helps prevent production of cancerous cells

Things that can decrease glutathione:

  • Exposure to environmental toxins such as home and beauty products, fragrances, pesticides, air pollution, and water pollution

  • Chronic stress

  • Antibiotic use and some medications such as Tylenol

  • Artificial sweeteners

  • Infections and injuries

Ways to increase glutathione:

  • Supplements: NAC and milk thistle

  • Sulfur rich foods: broccoli, cabbage, garlic and onions

  • Vitamin C rich foods: citrus, strawberries, kiwis, bell peppers

  • Selenium rich foods: beef, poultry, salmon, organ meats, eggs, cottage cheese, brazil nuts, mushrooms
